well, it's been a little while since i tried and a bunch of things
have been fixed, but macppc native Xorg was crashing at startup
last i was looking at it....

That's likely 2) biting you in the rear. Here modular xorg from pkgsrc works on all my 32bit macs, including the powerbook 3400c.
