Ok.. what about the malloc problems? What exactly is the status on that?

Xorg's module loader works Just Fine(tm) with jemalloc() and since rtr, phone etc. work on xorg's integration, also on macppc ( and if macppc works then the other powerpc ports are trivial to get going ), I guess fixing xfree86's loader isn't on anyone's TODO. My ELF clue level is way too low to even try, the problem appears to be that the loader relies on malloc() always returning memory close enough together for 24bit relocs to work, IIRC xorg uses ldopen() instead. Also, xorg works fine on most graphics hardware Apple ever shipped, where it doesn't work xfree86 doesn't do any better either, and xorg has better support for newer chips. Completely unlike - say - sparc, there's no reason not to use xorg.
