...that's just what Wolfgang picked, I suppose.  NetBSD's "in-house"
toolchain is a.out, really, and ELF support in the NetBSD toolchain is
really almost non-existent.

I expect that NetBSD/powerpc will switch to ELF soon after it's been
settled out on the Alpha and MIPS ports.  Matt Thomas, Chris Demetriou,
Jonathan Stone, and Manuel Bouyer have been putting in a lot of
effort on that front.  Now that all of the kernel ELF code has been
fixed, there are "just" some userland issues to deal with, including
weak symbols, and finishing up the toolchain work.
