I want to mention that I now copied the old disk to the
new (tar|untar) and booted the new disk (I was already
running 1.6) and so far all is well.

While the new disk is rather faster than the old (old is
an rz53, new is a Quantum XP34301 7200rpm) a simple dd
test shows little improvement, so I do not think I am
looking at a timing related problem.
