You aren't trying to run linux/i386 binaries on your pmax, aren't you ?
You can't run binaries compiled for on architecture on another architecture.

You can run Linux/i386 binaries on NetBSD/i386, or linux/sparc binaries
on NetBSD/sparc, but not Linux/i386 on NetBSD/sparc.
