I've found that removing the FB is a sure way to get a serial console B^)

I think if you "setenv console 's'" at the monitor prompt this is supposed
to force the PROM monitor to use a serial console.

I suspect if your PROM battery is nearly shot or dead, you'll not find this
change lasts beyond a power cycle though.
