Unfortunately, the answer is the latter.  SRM runs limited set of MIPS1
insns, and NetBSD can not utilize it.

It's not accident Digital has the similar register naming convention
and similar names of compiler tool in DU/OSF1.  They started building
Alpha development by picking up MIPS, then gradually replaced it with
their own.  Compiler itself was revised with GEM later.  Old timer
ULTRIXer did remember Digital provided MIPS binary interpreter mrx.
