    The problem was that I was declaring a path for the bootfile and a path
for the root file system. Apparently bootp only allows paths for the boot
file from the root path. (Relative paths in other words) So with the above
changed, too:

    :hn:\
    :bf="netbsd":\
    :rp=/usr/export/vax/root:\
