uh oh...now, after trying that, and being unable to do anything
(no virtual consoles) the only thing I could do was shut it off...
now it won't boot...hangs at the screen telling me about the amount
of memory being preserved...might have been an unlucky moment that
I chose to shut it off...

whew!  3rd times the charm!  I did get to the single user prompt
this time...I know I've gotta try to fsck, so I booted into single..
