Yup, thats how its suposed to work.

Bob: did you verify the checksum on your diskimage.gz, before
uncompressing it and dd'ing it to the disk?

Is getting diskimage.tgz, uncompressing it, and netbooting a viable
option?  What PROM revision do your 2100/3100 boxes have?
