Well, sorry for posting so prematurely, I was able to configure/build and
boot a generic kernel 
for my 5k/240 with little problems.  

Even found the config entries for the root/swap/dump volumes and now the
kernel 
happily autoboots all the way to multi-user mode.  

I haven't heard a response from anyone regarding the patches to conf-glue.c
so that
the zip drive on id 5 could be seen, so I'm being bold and went and changed
all
the tz entries in the array definitions to rz's, and increased the number
of drives
from 4 to 6.  I'm recompiling now to see if I can yet another bootable
kernel and
whether or not it can see the zip drive.
