On the 3100, try unplugging the network and plugging in a terminator.

Mine with a -current kernel does that after it prints "real mem" and
"avail mem". If I unplug it from the network, it continues to do autoconf. 

Then I can plug the cable back in and alls well again.

My experience is with a natively built kernel. Dec 9 sources.
