I've put together an ELF toolchain (GNU C, Gas, etc) and an ELF
loader.   Because a.out does not support GP offsets, ELF might be a
better choice.   The latest gcc snapshot, completely build with ELF
and GP offsets, seems to be about 30% faster at compiling a random
sample of large source files that I tried.

This is all under 4.4BSD, of course - I don't have anything going for
NetBSD.
