Geeze, it seems like the simple act of sending these messages is enough
to get me to look at the problem again..  I guess it's not much different
from psychotherapy that way! :-)

On a hunch, I tried this:

	gzip -c -d base.tar.gz | tar tvf -

Instead of this:

	tar tvzf base.tar.gz

And guess what:  It's going all the way through!!

Ack?!  That's actually pretty disturbing since it points to a much
worse problem someplace.  Anyone have any ideas?

Oh, and I'll still happily accept the comms program - download.c still
isn't much good beyond 9600 baud.
