	Ok, it turned out all that was wrong was a bad (discharged?) 
NVRAM.  I had a new one I bought for one of my Sun SS2s and placed it 
in the machine:

So, I  am finally pretty happy that the machine runs as it should.  I 
may add a battery to the old NVRAM chip just so I can put it back 
without worrying about it going boink on me again (well, if it does I 
could then replace its external battery, which I can get for under $3 
any day of the week new or free by going over old PCs ;).

Now, I do have a question:  it seems the CPU is the same as the one 
used in a DEC5000, like my 5000/25.  How fast is the CPU?
