Are you sure it freezes? Did you try to run sshd and ssh into it, or ping it? I know my mac seems to freeze when I exit X, but it's actually just the keyboard that stops responding, IIRC.
yes.. I'm sure: running ssh connections to this machine die and its IP is suddenly un-pingable.
I detached the keyboard after X has finished, so that the kernel should print the detached usb device in its log and nothing happens.
Let me try Marco's hint and see if this helps...
