I successfully booted and installed 4.99.72 on Mini G4 yesterday.

$ uname -a
NetBSD c0ff33.net 4.99.72 NetBSD 4.99.72 (GENERIC) #0: Fri Aug 29
03:42:23 PDT 2008
builds@wb27:/home/builds/ab/HEAD/macppc/200808280002Z-obj/home/ builds/ab/HEAD/src/sys/arch/macppc/compile/GENERIC
macppc

However, I did not boot from CD. I copied ofwboot.xcf to HFS partition,
and netbsd kernel to old FFS partition. Also, I did not use load-size
and adler32.

I didn't either :)
I entered "boot cd:,\ofwboot.xcf netbsd.macppc" then hit ENTER.
Every other output is from the PROM.

I've seen this on a G3 iMac - OF would refuse to run ofwboot.xcf from cd ( spewing some completely bogus error message, I think it was the same as you got ) but the exact same binary, copied to a HFS+ partition, Just Worked(tm). Maybe it helps to play with the command line syntax, Apple OF is weird in more than one way. There's a small chance that boot cd:ofwboot.xcf will work. Also, you don't need to specify the kernel's file name, ofwboot will try some well known names.

have fun
