Hmm, I don't have anything to hook up to the PowerBook's serial port
and IDE works just fine :/

It looks even 4.0 has some problem mesh CD and wd0 during cd install:

I've never seen anything like that, although I don't have anything hooked up to any mesh here right now. If the mesh problem would be - current only I'd blame bus_space-ification fallout but with 4.0 the only significant change I remember was to fix synchronous data transfers ages ago ( IIRC they're still not enabled by default ), before that mesh hasn't been touched for years. Do older kernels work?

Or could this be caused by fragile hardware?
