Hmm, this is a bit different from what the monitor reported - I guess
the Studio Display was just more picky about its frequencies. I also
wonder why they report 1280x1024@60Hz as preferred mode when the
monitor supports that resolution at 75Hz.
Anyway, apparently radeonfb fails to program PLLs right on this radeon
model, and what it produces is probably pretty close to the monitor's
tolerance so it might oscillate between trying to display this signal
and ignoring it. Does the monitor go into power saving mode when it
blanks out? ( you should be able to hear the difference between
blanking and actually turning the monitor off )

Radeonfb also said this:

please run 'ofctl -p' and post the output, maybe OpenFirmware has a
hint here ( like PLL parameters in the radeon's device properties )

have fun
Michael
