Ah, I see the difference - in -current radeonfb got correct monitor ID 
data and switched to the monitor's preferred mode instead of 1024x768. 
And it used monitor ID data provided by the firmware, apparently it had 
trouble reading them from the monitor itself. I'll adapt the relevant 
code to 4.0
