That WON'T work.
This kind of iMacs has weird monitors which need a fixed 60kHz 
horizontal frequency. The 800x600 timing is non-standard ( 89Hz or so ) 
while X will pick something more standard which the monitor will refuse 
to display.
1024x768 at 75Hz will work since it is both standard and uses 60kHz.
Using conservative timings will pretty much ensure that the monitor 
won't display anything.
