How big is the kernel image? If it's more than 5MB that's likely the 
problem.

Or boot it in target disk mode ( hold down T when powering up ) and 
repair things that way.
Onboard Ethernet wouldn't help much - OpenFirmware doesn't support it ( 
at least not on mine - NetBSD sees a tlp, OF sees /bandit/pci???? )
