What you have here is an early mach64 which XFree's atimisc driver has 
trouble with for some reason.

Like this:

Nothing at all.

The cause of the trouble is your graphics board, or rather XFree's 
driver for it. A different operating system or xorg won't make any 
difference either and I can't investigate it because I don't have the 
hardware. Unfortunately these boards seem to be pretty rare, you're 
only the second person I've ever seen who has one.
So, if at all possible, try a different graphics board. Unless someone 
with the right knowledge gets access to such a board it's not likely 
that this is going to be fixed any time soon. Sorry.
You can likely run X in whatever mode the console runs in and without 
acceleration using either Xmacppc or XFree ( both in /usr/X11R6/bin ) 
with the wsfb driver, that should work but it's slow.
