Hmm, now that you mention it - the awacs driver source has a comment 
indicating that earlier versions of the chip ( like those used in Old 
World macs and vary early New World ones ) have byte-swapping hardware 
which the newer ones lack. But since non-KDE applications apparently 
work as expected we can probably rule that one out.
Matthew - do /all/ KDE apps produce only white noise? Could also be 
some audio decoder library.
