Because Apple OF is buggy and unfortunately every version has its own 
set of weirdnesses we have to get around somehow. DIR works on a 
DOS-formatted ZIP on my S900 but not on any CDROM for instance and 
show-children never worked for me on any Mac. Doesn't keep it from 
loading ofwboot.xcf and netbsd.macppc though.
Just don't expect sane behaviour from Apple OpenFirmware. Find 
something that works for you, tell everyone about it and then stick to 
it.
