You mention avoiding Apple UFS for the root partition. Which stage
fails? The bootloader? The kernel shouldn't have any problems with
it (On a macppc system, you have to explicitly configure the kernel to
look at wd0e or whatever for the root partition, but that's because of
our braindamaged Apple partition map -> disklabel mapping, which
shouldn't affect an i386 port).
