Yes, you are right. And it is easy to disable those warnings, but do
not solve the issue

I also tried to run IBM's java vm (since it looks like it is the only
java vm that may work not so slowly on ppc). Unfortunately, it also
fails (but in a different matter). All binaries from IBM java 1.4.2 do
block in the pause state (probably because they do use the same library).

I've put a ktruss output at
http://www.loria.fr/~reilles/divers/IBMjava.trace
It ends with
 20158 1 java clone(0xf00, 0x1001dd20) =3D 10811
 20158 1 java write(0x5, 0xffffd1f0, 0x94) =3D 148
       "\0\0\0\0\0\0\0\^E\M-o\M^?u8\M-o\M^?\M-`h\M-o\M^?\M-b\^T\^O\M-y\^CD\=

 20158 1 java rt_sigprocmask(0x2, 0, 0xffffd2cc, 0x8) =3D 0
 20158 1 java write(0x5, 0xffffd2b8, 0x94) =3D 148
       "\M-o\M^?\M-2\M-`\0\0\0\0\M^?\M^?\M-S\M^H\^O\M-$F\M^L\M^?\M^?\M-S\M-=

 20158 1 java rt_sigprocmask(0x2, 0, 0xffffd228, 0x8) =3D 0

maybe this last call is blocking
