I am regressing for the moment. The dir command is not confusing me.

when I do,

dir cd or
dir /pci@f2000000/@d/mac-io@7/ata-3/disk@0

OF3 returns --> method <dir> not found; ihandle=ffbc5b80 phandle=ff84eb8 DIR
method failed.

when I do,
dir ff909820 (which came from dev / ls) or
dir cd:n (where n = 0 to ...) or
dir /pci@f2000000/@d/mac-io@7/ata-4/disk@0

OF3 returns --> can't OPEN the DIR device.

Chris, here is the the information you mentioned from the netbsd FAQ:

Question:
How do I get a listing (in Open Firmware) of the files on my disk?

Answer
Open Firmware 3, you can list hybrid ISO 9660/HFS (not pure ISO 9660), HFS,
HFS+, and MS-DOS.

Thanks,
Eric
