I know it's been quite a while since this reply, but the same error saying Invalid argument after
you try specifying media mc* for example:
-bash-3.00$ su
bash-3.00# ifconfig mc0 media 10baseT
ifconfig: SIOCSIFMEDIA: Invalid argument
that caused me a lot of grief when I was netbooting my macppc 9500 using 
>boot enet:,ofwboot.xcf
and trying to extract sets from nfs which asked me for mc0 media on nfs client config during
setup. I was wondering if this issue was resolved back then at all..
