Try -current. Significant changes have been made to bm, mc and gem that
haven't made it into any of the releases. Tim Kelly did a lot of work to
get mc working. He reported nearly 1MB/sec in both directions.

You can get an up to date kernel from
ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD-daily
