Hrm, so that's not causing it either.

And of course the dmesg output doesn't show anything funny either.
On the other hand - X at least managed to reset the graphics controller
to a sane state - machfb just redraws the console when X exits - it
doesn't even try to fiddle with any video parameters so X did
/something/ right. It certainly thinks everything is fine - could you
comment out / turn off everything that's gamma correction-, dpms- or in
any other way power management-related? Maybe X just unwittingly puts
your monitor to sleep.
