Yes, startx complains because it can't contact the Xserver which is
understandable if the Xserver doesn't start.

Ok, this time at least it loaded the right driver module.

Yes, because now there's a device section that matches exactly.

So the module didn't successfully probe your video chip. This can have
several reasons. Please download this:
ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/misc/macallan/macppc/ati_driver_xf44.tar.bz2
it contains the ati driver modules, put them into
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/ and see if that makes any difference.=20
( you may want to backup the old ones first, even if things don't work
properly )
