Most likely the former.

It's /dev/wd0e and the fs type should be ffs ( even for Apple UFS
partitions. You can even install NetBSD into one - works fine here )

Sorry, someone else will have to answer the keyboard question - mine are
all UK or US. But - the cursor keys, delete, backspace and so on should
be the same on german and US keyboards. XFree86 likes to hose keymaps
the way you described ( we're working on it ) but I've never seens
something like that in the console.
