The awacs driver is for older PCI Macs, for the iBook use the snapper
driver.

Yes, use the correct driver :)
Btw. I made a patch which adds knobs for the mixer's bass and treble
controls - MacOS X doesn't seem to use them at all, but they're rather
useful ( at least for me ) and any halfway decent mixer app will show
them.
I could just give you one of my kernels, assuming the iBook G4 800MHz
isn't really different hardware-wise ( this would also give you an
interface to the temperature sensors and the fan controller )

One word of warning though - the snapper driver is still a bit weird,
most things work but xmms' BSD audio plugin doesn't ( OSS emulation
works though )
