Ok, so it was X11 which did it. Hmm, XFree generally seems to have 
problems restoring video settings on exit when using any(?) Radeon, 
with XFree 4 the screen usually remains black ( on the iBook it works 
because the iBookHacks option keeps it from playing with video settings 
)
