Not really. NetBSD will live happily in a UFS partition ( but it will 
still want a swap partition )
But if you don't have any unpartitioned free space on your disk I'd 
recommend getting a 2nd one - that's usually a lot less trouble.

What do you mean 'determinate' ? There are lots of possible reasons why 
a disk wouldn't boot. Can OSX use it without problems? If it does then 
the problem is almost certainly not hardware related.
