Because different powerbooks deal with screen control differently.
I don't know of any contrast control on the lcds, just brightness.

Whether you have one depends on how you manage your X packages.

I really don't know what to look for.  You might also look to see if
there is something in a . file/directory somewhere.  Sometimes programs
like to save configuration in these places.

If kdm has a debug mode (as opposed to daemon(3)izing, you might try
running it in debug mode under ktrace or ktruss and seeing which
configuration files it tries to load and where it might get the vt05.
