I'm having quite same problem as well, I'm trying to
run Xmacppc but get error message:

Cannot open kbd/mouse 

I can configure my x server using xfree86config and I
specify wsmouse as my pointer device + I touch
/etc/ttyaction and write in there following
console * /usr/sbin/chown ${USER} /dev/wskbd0
/dev/wsmouse0
ttyE0   * /usr/sbin/chown ${USER} /dev/wskbd0
/dev/wsmouse0

error still presisit however. has anybody got any
ideas?
