after some pointless hacking I found that the Xserver from -current xsrc understands an option 'iBookHacks' which not only fixed the flickering display on my iBook but also succeeded in restoring the console when X exits. It's full of leftover rubbish first but it works. So, whatever this option does may also fix the exit problem on G4 PowerMacs, I guess I'll have a look...

Btw. did anyone try my Xserver/kernel patch on a PowerMac with some nVidia graphics card? I got one reply stating that it works but nothing about the console on exit.
