The ethernet support resides in the CURIO chip, which is a custom
chip from AMD. The markings on the chip are AM79C950K... This
chip provides support for the unenhanced SCSI (5 MB/s), ethernet, and
the serial ports. It was used in many Apple models going back to
the NuBus PowerMacs at least (6100, 7100 and 8100) and possibly in
some of the late Quadra models (840, 660?). It is also found on the
7200.

Anyway, the point is that if the ethernet component of the CURIO chip
failed, there are many models of old Mac from which the chip could be
salvaged. Of course, one would need the ability to desolder and
solder ~160 pin QFP chips, but that's not as hard as it sounds--a
little tedious.
