This is proverbially so basic it can't possibly be the problem, but since
I doubt there's anyone on this list who hasn't been bitten by one of
those, I'll suggest it anyway: Make sure that you have full two-way
network connectivity from the Mac. In particular, I'm thinking you may
not be getting a link status on the Mac end of things, indicating that the
Mac's receive path is down. If that is the case (and maybe even if it
isn't ;-), check the RJ-45 jack on the Mac to make sure all the little pins
are happy and properly aligned.

If the problem persists, consider a MacOS 8.X/9.X boot CD to verify the
network connectivity. The symptoms are highly suggestive of a hardware
problem of one sort or another...

| i put the new mac address in the dhcpd config file, try to boot it, and it
| fails.  fire up tcpdump, and i see it sending requests, i see the dhcp server
| sending replies, but nothing else.
