When building the kernel, I believe it's used to save the work of saving 
the FPU's state. Or something like that.

It does seem to be a problem with the assembler. I grabbed comp.tgz from 
current and was able to finish the kernel. I still can't do the 2.0 source 
tree, but maybe the 200406120000 snapshot will work better.
