This was due to incorrect termination. The 9600 has a longer SCSI cable
and I didn't attach the disk to the last connector... so I moved the
disk (attaching a flat terminator would have been an option too but I
was lazy).

This didn't improve network performance a ping -f to other machines
drops about 50% of the packets! I tried changing cables and using a PCI
ethernet card. Other computers on the same network don't suffer this
problem.
