NFS really destabilized my system as well.  I couldn't even finish running
make obj (as part of a buildworld) without the system hanging.  The only
part that was nfs mounted was /usr/obj.  The swap partition was local (wd0b).

If you can dig up a spare disk so you could avoid NFS mounting stuff I bet
you'd find your system quite a bit more stable.

This was with a Linux/ia32 server and an Intel NIC (fxp) in the Mac, which
doesn't seem too well supported...  but I wouldn't be surprised if the
onboard ethernet was just as bad (but at 25kbytes/sec I didn't have the
patience to try it).
