How long have you being experiencing this? My kernel sources are from
dec 27th (except /sys/compat/{mach|darwin} of course), and I experience
nothing like the nightmares you describe.

It's on a Wall street G3 powerbook. My config file is rather far away
from GENERIC: COMPAT_MACH and COMPAT_DARWIN, and as many options and
devices removed as possible (big kernels won't load). The most noticable
removed thing is probably ALTIVEC support.
