Sorry not with 8500, but I have checked on my 1.0.5 machine:

I don't belive OF 1/2 machine need to adhere any 
parameters at OF boot. Just need boot-device,
say, just
  boot scsi/sd@3:0

Your problem is that type of thing, isn't it ?

Following is my confirmation on UMAX S900.
(But I noticed this did not make any confirmation..)

I have burned 1.6.1/macppccd.iso and tried to boot
on my OF 1.0.5 machine:
  ----------------------
  Open Firmware, 1.0.5
  To continue booting the MacOS type:
  BYE<return>
  To continue booting from the default boot device type:
  BOOT<return>
   ok
  0 > 
  ----------------------

And tried several boot command lines:
(1) boot scsi/sd@3:0,ofwboot.xcf netbsd.gz      BAD
(2) boot scsi/sd@3:0,ofwboot.xcf netbsd.macppc  OK 
(3) boot scsi/sd@3:0,ofwboot.xcf                OK
(4) boot scsi/sd@3:0                            OK

In (1)-(3) case, ,ofwboot.xcf is just ignored and 
getting 'bad partition number, using 0' message.
(1) was giving wrong boot-file so to fail. Others 
are all OK as a result.

(1) boot scsi/sd@3:0,ofwboot.xcf netbsd.gz

0 > boot scsi/sd@3:0,ofwboot.xcf netbsd.gz bad partition number, using 0
