I think the issue is that the kernel partition code is picking up
the first APPLE_UNIX_SVR2 partition (the linux one) and putting
that on /dev/wd0a.  Since that's the default partition for root,
it tries to use the Linux partition as the root partition, never
mind what partition it loaded the kernel from.  There are a couple
of different ways around this, but all of them are hacky to one
extent or another.
