The entire "base" (non xsrc) build of NetBSD 1.6 on the macppc as
shipped was cross-built as a non-root user using read-only source on
a dual processor NetBSD/i386 box. (along with ~ 35 other platforms).

IIRC, there was a problem with the macppc INSTALL kernel or bootblocks
in "1.6", but I think that's been fixed the netbsd-1-6 branch since
that time.

The "cross buildability" of NetBSD has improved since NetBSD 1.6 was branched.

As for building -current on a 1.6 box; I do that all the time.
My main build box is a i386 running 1.6.1_RC2, and I cross build
i386-current and sparc-current on it regularly.
