Hi,

I have a PowerCenter 166. Booting off the NetBSD 1.6 ISO, no NVRAM
patches installed at present. boot command is boot scsi/@3:,OFWBOOT.XCF
and it does the rest. Relevent Dmesg lines:

esp0: illegal command: 0xc2 (state 2, phase 3, prevphase 1)
esp0: SCSI bus reset
(repeats 4 more times) (my cdrom at ID 3 does not get probed)

sometimes I'll get the following in sysinst when I try and do the install

sd0(esp0:0:0:0): esp0 timed out [ecb 0x2ad000 (flags 0x1 dleft 2c,
stat0)], <state 2, nexus 0x2ad000, phase(| 1, c 101, p 101), resid 2c
msg(q 20, o 80) DMA active>
sd0(esp0:0:0:0): esp0 timed out [ecb 0x2ad000 (flags 0x41, dleft 2c,
stat0)], state 2, nexus 0x2ad000, phase(| 1, c 101, p 101), resid 2c,
msg(q 20, o 80) DMA active> AGAIN
esp0: SCSI bus reset

repeat that a lot,
sd0: could not mode sense (4/5); using fictitious geometry

repeat timeouts some more with dleft 8 instead of 2c
sd0(esp0:0:0:0): could not get size
repeat some more with dleft 200
more timeouts... etc.

hit the reset switch, go back to open firmware, can't boot.
OpenFirmware throws up some RESETing SCSI bus messages and then fails.
Have to power cycle the machine to be able to boot again.

Sometimes I get sd0(esp0:0:0:1) time outs, but all the same general idea.

Some things that don't add up:

total memory = 81920 KB
avail memory = 66388 KB
using 1049 buffers containing 4196 KB of memory
<- is that right? 80 to 66 MB of RAM?

Where is Platinum? The onboard video controller is nowhere to be found in
the dmesg. Am I right in thinking that Platinum is just the Valkyrie chip
that was in the old Quadra and Preformas attached to PCI instead of NuBus?

How come I can boot with the cdrom, and it never gets probed correctly by
the kernel

Any thoughts/flames/requests/gripes? I seem to remember having
people report ESP problems to the list a while back with 7x00 series
machines. Where do I go from here?
