Not doomed, no, but you are going to have an adventure, I think.

I encourage you to try it.  I think what you run into will be 
interesting information and I know there are people on this list who 
would be interested in the results.  At least 2-3 of them have tried 
to produce APM's that could be used to boot NetBSD directly with 
varying degrees of success---mostly on OF1 systems, while I believe 
you have an OF3 system?
